Shelby Labate’s PageMiles for Hope
This September, I am taking part in the “Miles for Hope” to raise awareness and spread a message of prevention and of hope for Missing Children. This event is about raising critical funds to support this cause and with children spending more time online, away from the safe haven of school and camp, the need is greater than ever.
This ride was started after the abduction of 12-year-old, Sara Anne Wood. Sara was last seen riding her pink and white ten-speed mountain bicycle to her family’s residence on Hacadam Road in Frankfort, New York on August 18, 1993. Sara’s bicycle and the supplies she was carrying were discovered in an area of brush several hundred feet off of Hacadam Road later in the evening. The bicycle was leaning against a tree and the supplies were scattered nearby. Sara has never been seen again.
The purpose of this ride is too:
-To honor the memory of all missing children.
-To raise public awareness of the plight of all missing and exploited children and the need for child safety education.
-To raise funds to support the missing children poster distribution, community education for the prevention of child abduction and sexual exploitation.
Why? Because with technology advancing each year, this has allowed children to become increasingly at risk to these predators. In 2019 NCMEC (the National Center for Missing and Exlopited Children) assisted law enforcement and families with more than 29,000 cases of missing children.
– 91 percent endangered runaways.
– 4 percent family abductions.
– 4 percent critically missing young adults, ages 18 to 20.
– Less than 1 percent nonfamily abductions.
– 1 percent lost, injured or otherwise missing children.
Of the nearly 26,300 runaways reported to NCMEC in 2019, 1 in 6 were likely victims of child sex trafficking.
These statistics should never be the future of any child. We need to build a world where children can be safe and grow up to follow their dreams.
So, I am raising funds with this event to help give a voice to these children, for poster distribution, and community education for the prevention of child abduction and exploitation.
Please help me give these children the voice they deserve and donate.
“If we bring one child home it’s a success.”
